Do you Snore? If so, you could be at risk for Sleep Apnea!

Recent research done indicates that sleep apnea is comparable to being drunk.

According to research done by Dr. Scott. T. Johnson, Dr. William A. Broughton, and Jerry Halberstadt authors of 2002 The Phantom of the Night, "Sleep apnea reduces vigilance and increases reaction times as badly as drinking alcohol or being drunk."

What is snoring?

Obviously we all know the general term, but did you know that snoring is a good indication of a breathing problem? At times, snoring can be a sign that the individual suffers from Obstructive Sleep Apnea, commonly referred to as OSA.

This is caused when the jaw opens while sleeping, resulting in the tongue to fall to the back of the throat. When this happens, this causes the airway to become smaller sending vibrations to the throat, developing the common snore.

Now you may be thinking, "What's the harm in a little snoring?"

If the airway becomes too narrow, individuals can develop OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. When an individual develops OSA, the tissues and muscles around the throat begin to relax, blocking airflow to the lungs, resulting in a collapsed airway.

When the airway is blocked, your brain and body cannot receive oxygen. This causes the individual to partially awaken to a conscienceless gasping for air, obviously preventing a good nights rest. People who suffer from OSA sleep with this cycle repeatedly occurring throughout the night. In turn, this places an extra strain on the body and heart.

Can this cause serious health problems?

Sleep apnea is considered a serious chronic illness that simply cannot be ignored. Sleep apnea can lead to:

-Heart attack
-Depression
-Chronic sleepiness
-High blood pressure
-Stroke
-Morning headaches
-Heartburn

Your next question, "How can this be prevented?"

There are several ways to treat this but the best way is through TAP. TAP or Thorton Adjustable Positioner, has a success rate of 95% and is a great substitute for surgery, medication or mask treatment.

TAP treats snoring by allowing the airway to remain open, improving breathing during sleep, through a custom-made appliance worn while sleeping. The appliance is a tray-like piece that looks like a teeth whitening tray. You just snap it over the upper and lower teeth and hook the trays together.

The tray holds the lower jaw in position, preventing the airway from collapsing. The more forward your jaw is, the more open your airway.

Now for the kicker- How instant is the snoring relief?

Almost all patients experience relief the first nights rest with TAP treatment. The appliance generally takes only a week to get used to but gives you a lifetime to breathe easy.

An estimated 51 million Americans suffer from snoring or sleep apnea, says scientist and recent research. By 2020 studies show that 1 in every 5 Americans will be affected by sleep apnea. Even if you don't directly suffer from sleep apnea, studies show, the leading loss of of sleep is attributed to a snoring bed partner.

With this many people affected by a simple snore, TAP seems like a simple and effective alternative. You can have a good night rest, go ahead and breath easy.

110th Annual AAO Session

Recently Dr. Ray visited Washington, D.C. to continue bettering his education at the 110th American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session. The theme of the meeting was based around the motto: Passion for Excellence.

The Opening Ceremonies took place Saturday, May 1, ending the session on May 4th with an AAO Gala held in the Newsum. Live entertainment, food, and museum exhibits were provided to to doctors and staff to help them unwind after a long few days of knowledge overload.

The session consisted of several educational offerings. Special events, programs, business meetings, workshops, lectures and an exciting exhibit hall made up the majority of the session provided to the doctors and staff.

The goal of the session is education. With continuous education, doctor's can provide their patients with exceptional treatment and top-of-the-line technology. The knowledge the doctors and staff gain helps them to become aware of the current expansion of knowledge and the future of orthodontics.

Not only did the attendees gain professional knowledge, they also gained from inspiration and personal development lectures. Matthew Kelly's "Dream Manager," was part if the May 1st Personal and Professional Development program. The program helped to educate attendees on how to "achieve goals in work and in life and how organizations can achieve more by enabling employees to achieve their individual goals," said Robert James Bray, AAO President.

It will come to no surprise the AAO Exhibit Hall was one of the main featured events. The Exhibit Hall feature the world's largest assemblage of orthodontic products. Vendors prepared and gathered several individual exhibits in the hall to provide exceptional products to meet the patients needs.

The knowledge gained from the session will lead to a more successful treatment plan for you and your family, provided by Dr. Ray. Next year's session will be hosted in Chicago in 2011. These session are certainly not something any doctor or staffer would want to miss.
